Master Lee Visits the Randolph Dojang

This Thursday Grand Master Tae Sung Lee ran class in Randolph for the first time since the early 1990's.
Master Lee used to come to Blue Wave Randolph starting in 1987 and taught classes quite often back
when classess were in the basement of the old Village school.

After Master White warmed up the class, Master Lee started the

class with basic hand movements followed by kicking basics.

After about a half an hour he then went move

by move through the first five TaeGuek poomse.

We eventually went through the kibons and even got in some sparring.

9th Blue Wave Jr's Tournament

We attempted to move our tournament away from all of the tournaments that are held in the spring. We chose December 1st and ended up with only 60% of our typical number of competitors. But despite the low tournout (76) we still had a great day. No major injuries that I know of. The level of competition was good, and everyone got in multiple matches.

Weather is supposed to be good, but very cold. I have found the inside of the gym to be very cold in the past, so bring warm cloths.

Miss Jennifer Chase Promoted to 2nd Dan

Friday Night stated the Summer Camp with the Black Belt testing. All candidates passed. Thirteen Candidates tested for 1st Recommended, ten Candidates tested for 1st Decided, four tested for 2nd Dan and two tested for 3rd Dan.

It was a beautiful weekend. Clear blue skies with temperatures in the low eighties during the day and maybe as low as 55 by the morning. Once again the Slip and Slide was great...thanks Mr. Williams.

Support posts in a dojang always seem to get in the way. So we spent a couple of weekends building up a deeper section support beam out of plywood to eliminate one of the posts. In doing so we now have more room in the west end of the room, so we moved the flags down to that end.

Summer Camp is nearly upon us. We are working on a simple but nice jump-spin back kick for Miss Buckholts Decided test. We are working on getting Miss Jenny Chase's break to be a four station set up with the setup and break all taking less than one minute.

This years tournament was held at Vermont Technical College Judd gym in Randolph. We had 115 competitors this year which is our highest number yet (107 in 2006 and 113 in 2005). I'll update this entry a little better later in the week, so stand by.....

Miss Chase had a great day sparring. Lost one match (sudden death) and came out of the loser bracket to come in first place.

New Changes in the Competition Rules Lie Ahead

At the upcoming Taekwondo World Championships in Beijing (May 18th to 22nd) the world's Taekwondo leaders will gather again. WTF will hold its General Assembly on May 17th and again the Competition Rules for Kyorugi will be changed.
We have taken a look on the proposals and here are the most important topics that will have an influence on competition training and tactics - provided that all changes are accepted by the General Assembly:
Hand and foot protector will become mandatory.
New definition of legal attack zones.
3 points for successful attacks to the face.
7 point gap and 12 point ceiling will be deleted.
New definitions of Kyonggos (reduced number).
4th round with sudden death with prolongation (if no decision is made in the 4th round, then the fight will go on in more rounds until one competitor scores).
After a KO to the head the competitor can still fight again within 30 days if a doctor gives a written permission.
Furthermore, an Ethics Committee against the violation of ethical values will be established.
A lot of work for the delegates at the G.A. and a lot of responsibility. All those proposed changes have been prepared by the respective commissions in regard to a better and smoother competition management. Hopefully it will come out that way.
Regarding Poomse tournaments, new doboks for Poomse competition have been designed. There will be a difference between male and female dobok and between those for Poom grades, low Dan grades (from 1st to 6th Dan) and high Dan grades (from 7th to 9th Dan). Design resembles closely traditional koran clothing but has been generally well acepted by those who have seen a sample already.

Ringmaster Open

Saturday May 5th, Several Blue Wavers went to Northboro Massachusetts to compete in the Ringmaster Open. I spent the day refereeing, and only got to see Miss Buckholts compete. I missed her Poomse (Mr. Kline said that he thought she should have won). But I did see her sparring match. The first match went to a 11 to 11 tie at the end of the 2nd round. Miss Buckholts opponent came out hard and ran right into front leg side kick knocking her to the ground and the match was instantly over. Miss Buckholts had a much tougher time in her second match and did not prevail.

Perfect Cribbage Hand

Friday April 6, 2007 I achieved Cribbage perfection. I got a 29 on the second game against my wife. I’ve been playing this game for about 25 years and we play ten to twenty games a week on average and this is the first time I’ve ever seen anybody get the hand. I just wish I could have gotten this at the annual Blue Wave Summer Camp Cribbage tournament, but the odds are very long. The odds of getting a perfect 29 hand in a 4 player game are 1 in 649,740, whereas it was much easier in a 2 player game: Only 1 in 216,580.

Several Blue Wave competitors went to compete in the 2007 United States Taekwondo Classic Tournament in Waterford, Connecticut Sunday. Kimberly from Randolph got two medals, one silver in sparring and a bronze in Poomse (Forms) . Great Job, Kimberly!

Kimberly Buckholts is one on the eleven candidates testing for 1st poome/dan at the upcoming black belt testing at winter camp. This is a picture of her at a pre-test held at Bradford Blue Wave last Friday night. She did very good. We’ve been working on getting her breaks done quickly and with one try. She broke three of the four stations in one try, but had set up the two-board side kick too far away and ended up having to try again. My goal is to have her complete her breaks all in one sequence taking as little time as possible.

What: 2nd Annual RingMaster Open Taekwondo Championship
When: Saturday, May 5th, 2007
Where: Marlborough, Massachusetts USA
Heads up everyone! Reserve May 5th, 2007 for the RingMaster Open! There will be double elimination in sparring and the new forms format for 14 and up Black Belt divisions. All other divisions will again be using single repechage bracketing for sparring and forms.

It will be USAT sanctioned. (USAT membership required $35)

There will be a referee seminar and medical seminar on the May 4th. All referees that participate in the tournament will be reimbursed for the seminar and given a free copy of the ScoreMaster software (a $99 value)! Referees will be provided lodging as required.

Coaches that bring 5 or more players will have their fee waived.
They will again be holding a drawing for early registration. 3 competitors will be drawn to have their entry fees reimbursed.
The registration package and additional information is posted on the RingMaster Open web site (www.ringmasteropen.net).

Winter Camp is coming soon. March 2, 2007. When Winter camp first started, Saturday nights were talent shows. Varying degrees of talent were displayed. The photo at the left was our talent. Large cardboard hats were worn with our heads and upper bodies hidden inside. Faces painted on our bellies as whistling music played, we made the painted on mouths move to look like the bellies were doing the whistling. Very Funny
